Artificial lift is a process to remove hydrocarbons (oil) from a reservoir by using pumps located deep in the well and push the oil to the surface. This is generally used when the reservoir no longer has an internal pressure to force the oil to the surface. Many older wells can still produce oil but need a mechanical way to remove the oil and bring it to the surface for collection. Artificial lift is used to recover more production from wells and the most common artificial lift device is a pump jack.
